What Is A Neonatal Care?

A baby’s body arrangement must work together in well organised sync. Often, newborns face a lot of adversity in making the transition into the world. If a baby is born prematurely, or as a result of a difficult delivery, birth defects can make the changes further more challenging. Newborn babies in requisite need for intensive medical attention are absorbed into a special area of the hospital called the Neonatal Intensive care unit. The NICU, at Vijay Hospital, Hosur, incorporates advanced technology with skilled health care professionals to provide specialized care for our tiniest patient. Additionally, the equipment and atmosphere of a neonatal unit can be quite unsettling for new parents.

Babies admitted to the neonatal care are premature, born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, and having a low birth weight of less than 5.5 pounds as they tend to have a medical condition that requires special care. Additionally, Babies with medical conditions such as heart problems, infections or birth defects are also absorbed in the NICU.

There are various crucial factors that can put babies at a high risk, increasing their chances being admitted into the neonatal care. They are:

Maternal Factors:

If the parents of the baby, between the age group of 16 - 40 have had a history of drugs and alcohol abuse, diabetes, high BP, heavy bleeding or sexually transmitted diseases, the baby is prone to risk. Other factors include multiple pregnancies with twins or other, too much or too little amniotic fluid, or a premature rupture of membranes in the parent’s body.

Delivery Factors:

Diseases such as fatal distress, breech delivery presentation or any other abnormal presentation, Meconium, nuchal cord, forceps delivery can up the chances of the baby’s health being at risk.

Baby Factors:

Conditions specific to the birth of the baby such as birth defects, premature delivery (before 37 week or more than 42 weeks), birth weight being less 5 lbs or over 8lbs are the major reasons. Apart from this, other concerns can be respiratory complications such as rapid breathing, grunting, apnea etc, and infections such as herpes, chlamydia, group B streptococcus, seizures, blood transfusion, hypoglycaemia etc can be causes of major concern.
